Review articleNext-Generation Drug Delivery Systems for Diabetes Mellitus: Recent Advances, Clinical Translation, and Future Perspectives
Abstract
Conventional antidiabetic drug delivery systems often suffer from enzymatic degradation, low oral bioavailability, and poor patient compliance. These limitations necessitate innovative, non-invasive, and efficient delivery strategies to maintain optimal glycemic control. It provides an in-depth analysis of next-generation drug delivery technologies for diabetes specifically nanoparticles, hydrogels, and phytosomes highlighting their design principles, therapeutic potential, and translational readiness. Polymeric and lipid nanoparticles improve insulin and drug stability, enhance epithelial permeability, and enable sustained release. Hydrogels especially glucose responsive and microneedle integrated ones offer stimuli triggered insulin release with high biocompatibility. Phytosome formulations significantly enhance bioavailability and clinical performance of herbal bioactives like berberine, curcumin, and quercetin. The integration of nanocarrier engineering, smart polymer design and lipid phytochemical conjugation is reshaping diabetes therapeutics toward needle free, self-regulated, and patient-friendly solutions. These technologies hold immense promise for future clinical translation.
