Abstract

Medication safety and adherence are essential components of effective management among patients receiving lipid-lowering agents, particularly because long-term and consistent treatment is often required to achieve and maintain recommended lipid levels. Although medicines such as statins, ezetimibe, fibrates, and other lipid-modifying therapies substantially reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications, treatment outcomes may be compromised by medication-related problems, adverse effects, inappropriate medication use, and poor adherence. This review focuses on the relationship between medication safety and adherence among patients receiving lipid-lowering therapy. It explores factors that influence adherence, including patient-related characteristics, treatment complexity, adverse drug reactions, medication-related beliefs, socioeconomic conditions, healthcare-provider communication, and the patient's understanding of therapy. The review also highlights common medication-safety concerns, including drug–drug interactions, inappropriate dosing, monitoring requirements, and adverse effects associated with lipid-lowering agents. Assessment of adherence using validated tools and appropriate clinical monitoring can help identify patients at risk of treatment failure and medication-related harm. Patient education, medication counselling, regular follow-up, simplification of treatment regimens, shared decision-making, and effective communication between healthcare professionals and patients may improve both adherence and medication safety. An integrated approach combining pharmacological monitoring with patient-centred interventions is therefore important for optimizing lipid management and reducing preventable cardiovascular morbidity. Further research is needed to develop individualized strategies that simultaneously address medication safety and adherence in patients receiving long-term lipid-lowering therapy.
